What is Crazy Eights
The wild-8s card game, ready in one tap
Crazy Eights (also written Crazy 8s) is a fast shedding game played with one 52-card deck. Match the top discard by suit or rank, play an 8 whenever you need to change the suit, and be the first to empty your hand. Cards left in your hand at the end of a round count against you, and the first player to reach 100 points loses the match.
- 1 to 3 computer opponents
- Play heads-up with seven cards each, or take a seat at a three- or four-handed table with five cards each. The opponent count is one tap away and is remembered on your device.
- Plays in your browser
- No download, no install, no plugins. crazyeights.app is ready the moment the page loads, on desktop and mobile, and a new game starts instantly without reloading.
- Playable cards, highlighted
- Cards you can play lift off the hand and glow; the rest dim. After an 8, four big suit buttons let you choose the next suit — no menus, no guessing.
- Progress saved locally
- Matches won, round win rate, streaks and your best match score are stored on your device — never on a server, and there is nothing to sign up for.
How to play
How to play Crazy Eights
Crazy Eights is a game of matching and timing. Follow the suit or rank of the top card, keep your 8s for when you need them, and empty your hand before anyone else does.
- 1
Read the deal
Each player is dealt 7 cards in a two-player game (you and one computer) or 5 cards with three or four players. One card is turned face up to start the discard pile — never an 8 — and the rest form the draw pile. Your hand sits at the bottom of the table; the computer players sit above.
- 2
Match the top card
On your turn, play one card that matches the top discard by suit or by rank: a 6 of hearts goes on any heart or on any 6. Playable cards lift and glow, and cards you cannot play are dimmed, so you never have to hunt for a legal move.
- 3
Play 8s wild
An 8 can be played on anything, at any time. After you play one you name the suit that must be matched next — pick the suit you hold the most of. The suit badge beside the discard pile always shows the suit in force.
- 4
Draw when you are stuck
If nothing in your hand is playable you draw one card. If it fits, you play it; if not, your turn passes. You can only draw when you have no legal play. The first player to empty their hand wins the round.
Tips to win more games
- Shed your high cards first — Kings, Queens and Jacks cost 10 points each if you get caught holding them.
- Save an 8 for a moment you are stuck, not for a moment you are comfortable. A wild card is worth most when it rescues a turn.
- When you play an 8, name the suit you hold the most of, so your next turns are all playable.
- Watch the opponents’ card counts. When someone is down to two cards, stop hoarding and start disrupting the suit.
- Changing suit is a defence: play a card that flips the suit to one you know an opponent has been unable to match.
- Do not chase the last card. An 8 held to the end costs 50 points, so play it once your hand is short.
FAQ
Crazy Eights, answered
Straight answers about the free Crazy Eights card game you can play online in your browser.
What is Crazy Eights?
Crazy Eights is a shedding card game played with a standard 52-card deck. Players take turns playing a card that matches the top of the discard pile by suit or rank, and 8s are wild. The first player to get rid of every card wins the round, and the other players score penalty points for the cards they still hold. It is also written as "Crazy 8s" or "Crazy 8".
How do you play Crazy Eights?
Deal 7 cards each for two players or 5 cards each for three or four, and turn one card up to start the discard pile. On your turn, play a card that matches the top discard by suit or rank, or play an 8 and name the next suit. If you cannot play, draw one card and play it if it fits. The first player to empty their hand wins the round; everyone else adds the value of the cards they hold, and the match ends when someone reaches 100 points.
Is Crazy Eights free to play online?
Yes. crazyeights.app is completely free and runs entirely in your browser. There is nothing to buy, download, or install, and there are no interruptive video ads, premium tiers, or paywalls. Open the page, press Play and a game is dealt.
Do I need to download an app or create an account?
No. The game is the website — a 100% browser-based build with no app store download and no sign-up. Your stats are saved locally in your browser, so there is no login to manage.
What does an 8 do in Crazy Eights?
An 8 is wild. You can play it on any card at any time, and when you do you name the suit that the next player must match. The next player can also respond with another 8. An 8 left in your hand at the end of a round costs 50 points, the most of any card.
How many cards do you get in Crazy Eights?
Seven cards each in a two-player game, and five cards each with three or four players. The remaining cards form the draw pile, with one card turned face up to start the discard pile. This version starts with an ordinary card, never an 8.
Do I have to draw if I can play?
No — and in this version you cannot. You may only draw when nothing in your hand is playable. If you draw a card that fits, you can play it right away; if it does not, your turn passes to the next player.
How does scoring work?
When a player goes out, each other player scores the value of the cards in their hand: 8 = 50 points, King, Queen and Jack = 10 each, Ace = 1, and every other card its face value. The winner of the round scores nothing. When any player reaches 100 points the match ends and the lowest total wins, so low scores are good.
How do I win at Crazy Eights?
Shed high-value cards early, save 8s for turns when you would otherwise have to draw, and name the suit you hold the most of after playing one. Watch opponents’ hand sizes: when someone is down to one or two cards, use your 8s to change the suit and slow them down.
When should I play an 8?
Play an 8 when it saves you from drawing, when it lets you go out, or when an opponent is about to go out and you need to change the suit. Holding 8s to the very end is risky because each one costs 50 points if an opponent goes out first.
Does the game save my progress?
Your matches won, rounds won, win streaks, best match score, sound setting and opponent count are saved locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server and there is no account. Because the save lives on the device, a different phone, a new browser profile, or cleared site data looks like a fresh start. A game in progress is not saved if you close the tab.
Can I play Crazy Eights on mobile?
Yes. The layout is built for touch: tap a lifted card to play it, tap the draw pile when you are stuck, and tap a suit after an 8. Your hand, the piles and the computer players fit on one portrait screen, and starting a new game is instant with no page reload.
